VGCC adding Cosmetology evening classes at Franklin Campus

During the spring 2015 semester, Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus will offer Cosmetology courses during the evening. The evening program is returning after an absence of several years. The Franklin Campus , located on N.C. 56 just outside Louisburg, will join the South Campus in Granville County as the two VGCC locations offering Cosmetology during the evening hours.

“Based on requests from members of the community, we’re going to offer Cosmetology at Franklin Campus not only during the day but also at night, to accommodate students who work during the day,” VGCC Cosmetology program head Tomeka Moss said. “This is a great opportunity for those people who are employed but either want to enhance the skills they already have or gain skills to start a new career. At the same time, VGCC is an affordable option, with tuition that is about half of what you would find at a private cosmetology school.”

The spring semester begins on Monday, Jan. 12, 2015. The evening Cosmetology schedule will include classes meeting on Mondays from 5:15 until 9:45 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5 until 9:45 p.m.

VGCC offers diploma and certificate programs in Cosmetology , Cosmetology Instructor , and Manicuring/Nail Technology . These curriculum programs provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. Students develop their skills in a simulated salon environment. According to Moss, serving a large, diverse clientele in the salons and learning under experienced instructors have helped VGCC students meet their licensure requirements and pass their exams administered by the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners. Strong performances by VGCC Cosmetology students helped the college recently receive recognition from the N.C. Community College System for best practices in passing rates on various licensure exams .

New students can apply for admission now, online or on any VGCC campus. Orientation , advising and registration for spring classes are currently ongoing. Students must pay tuition and fees by Dec. 17 at 5 p.m., if paying in person, or by Dec. 31 if paying online.
