Vance-Granville Community Band presents free Holiday Concert

The Vance-Granville Community Band will perform its sixth annual Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County. Admission is free and the public is invited.

The band has prepared a program with an international theme, entitled “Christmas Around the World.” The audience will visit several different countries through selections such as “Sleepers, Wake” by German composer J.S. Bach, “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed, “Brazilian Sleigh Bells” by Percy Faith, “England’s Carol” (based on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”) and the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah.” Various medleys of traditional carols as well as the modern holiday standard, “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway, round out the program.

Raynah Adams of Henderson will serve as narrator for the concert.

VGCC music instructor Ivory Brock is the band’s primary conductor. He will be assisted during the concert by associate conductor Brian Miller, the band director at Louisburg High School.

First formed in 2008, the Vance-Granville Community Band includes not only VGCC students but also high school students and adult professionals from throughout the region. As Brock noted, “The band consists of people from our community who have a love for music and want to present to you, our listening audience, a program that will start your holiday season off with a joyous occasion.” For more information, call Ivory Brock at (252) 738-3222 .
