State Treasurer Gives VGCC Grads Financial Advice

It isn’t often that community college graduates get personal financial advice from the state’s top finance officer.

That’s what happened Aug. 5 when State Treasurer Richard H. Moore gave the commencement address at Vance-Granville Community College’s summer graduation. The college awarded degrees, diplomas and certificates to 230 graduates.

Moore, a Granville County native and current resident of Vance County, was introduced by John K. Nelms, chairman of Vance-Granville’s Board of Trustees. Nelms, who lives in Oxford, said he knew Richard Moore would be a success in life when he was playing basketball in Nelms’ driveway as a young boy.

Moore told the graduates it is customary to give gifts at graduation, and he had one for them – a short speech. Then he said he planned to talk a little about money, something with which he should be quite knowledgeable since he manages $60 billion in state funds.

“There are two kinds of people,” Moore said, “those who work for money and those who have money work for them.” He emphasized the need for planning for one’s future. He said if a person saves $1.70 a day, beginning at age 25, that person would have $163,000 at age 65. “It doesn’t take a whole lot, just set a little aside on a regular basis,” he urged.

Moore also told the graduates that, because of incentives built into the tax code, it is cheaper to own a home and buying a home is the best savings a person can ever have.

Moore’s final financial advice involved credit, and he advised the graduates to be very careful in this area. “Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is,” he said. “Always understand where your money is going.”

VGCC President Robert A. Miller conferred degrees on, and presented diplomas and certificates, to the 164 curriculum program graduates and the 66 adult high school education and GED graduates. He was assisted by Vice President Fred H. Wilson Jr., Dean of Curriculum Marsha J. Nelson, and Dean of Continuing Education Leo Kelly Jr.
