Papandrea, Kelly stand out on VGCC volleyball squad

The Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball team has struggled in the win-loss column this season, but the performances of two Vanguards in particular have earned them notice.

At a tri-match on Sept. 29, setter Veronica Papandrea of Durham (pictured above, left), who graduated from Northern High School, and Cynthia Kelly of Oxford (pictured above, right), an outside hitter and graduate of J.F. Webb High School, put up strong numbers, as they have done throughout much of the season. Over the course of the two matches that day, which VGCC lost to Johnston Community College and Virginia Western Community College, Papandrea contributed five service aces, 16 digs and seven assists. Meanwhile, Kelly made seven service aces, 21 digs, two aces, six kills and one block.

In the Vanguards’ losses to Davidson County Community College and Wytheville (Va.) Community College on Oct. 2 and Oct. 5, respectively, the pair were not quite as productive. Nevertheless, Kelly put up four digs and one kill when VGCC hosted Davidson County CC, and Papandrea added one service ace and six digs in the Oct. 5 match.
