Numbers, Value Of VGCC Scholarships Presented At Awards Day Set Records

Vance-Granville Community College presented a record 278 scholarships to full-time students at Scholarship Awards Day on Sept. 25 at the college.

In addition, 200 part-time students have received scholarships valued at $300 each.

President Robert A. Miller told the scholarship recipients, presenters and guests gathered in the Civic Center that both the number of awards and their value – $242,700 – established new records for the college’s scholarship program.

Seven Presidential Scholar Awards of $1,200 each were presented to seven of the “best of the best” of Vance-Granville’s students. Presidential Merit Awards of $1,000 each went to 67 students, and 184 scholars received Academic Achievement Awards valued at $500 each. Also, 20 non-endowed scholarships valued at a total of $15,300 were presented at the ceremonies.

President Miller thanked the individuals, businesses, industries, civic groups and other organizations for their gifts of almost $5 million to the VGCC Endowment Fund and Scholarship Program. This makes it one of the largest college scholarship programs in North Carolina.

Following the ceremonies, individuals who endowed scholarships or representatives of the groups who made the award possible ate lunch in the Civic Center with the recipients of their scholarships. This gave the students an opportunity to thank their donors and the presenters a chance to learn more about the recipients and their academic goals.

Recipients of the Presidential Scholar Awards, made possible by contributions of $25,000, were:
