Nine Additional Online Courses Offered By Computer Center

Vance-Granville Community College has added nine courses from two additional companies to its online library of computer extension courses.

Online courses are ones that individuals can work on at home or in their workplaces, and they do not have to attend classes on one of VGCC’s four campuses. The college has been offering courses by computer industry leaders Microsoft and Novell and has now added courses by Cisco and Oracle. With these additions, VGCC can now offer more than 80 classes online.

Cisco is recognized as a worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, and Oracle is the world’s leading supplier of software for information management and databases, according to Ann Behar, coordinator of VGCC’s Computer Extension Program. “They are both big players in their niches in the computer market,” Behar said.

“Persons looking for jobs in the Information Systems field will probably run into at least one of the four or all of these products we offer,” Behar added.

The new courses will be available for the summer semester and will include “Introduction to Cisco Routing & Configuration,” “Advanced Routing & Configuration,” “Building Cisco Remote Access Networks” and “Designing Cisco Networks,” all from Cisco. Oracle courses offered are “New Features for 8,” “Database Administration 8,” “Backup & Recovery,” “Introduction to Oracle,” and “Oracle Developer.”

An attractive feature of both Cisco and Oracle is that they offer certification programs for their courses, Behar said. “Online classes at Vance-Granville are geared for students who are not only learning the programs but for passing certification exams,” she said. “Students are telling us these courses are a great way for gaining certification, and they are doing well on the exams.”

The VGCC Computer Center’s online program offers courses for people who need the tools to get their jobs done but who don’t want to work in the technology field, as well as courses for Information Technology professionals.
