More Than 400 Students Earn Scholarships

Previous records all fell by the wayside during Vance-Granville Community College’s 14th annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the Civic Center.

Two hundred twelve full-time students received grants worth $132,425 for the 1998-99 school year. For the first time, 200 scholarships worth $300 each were given to part-time students at the college.

Last year, 165 full-time students received scholarships totaling $99,975.

The part-time scholarships as well as 15 Presidential Merit Awards of $1,000 and 28 Academic Achievement Scholarships worth $500 each resulted from the bequest of $900,000 received by the college this year from the estate of Miss Nannie Crowder, said Dr. Ben F. Currin, VGCC president.

Scholarships from the VGCC Endowment Fund are made possible by gifts from corporate and individual donors over recent years. Scholarships are awarded from interest earned on the fund, which will be more than $4 million when a $1.9 million bequest is received from the estate of R.B. Butler of Warrenton, who died this summer.

Dr. Currin and representatives of the businesses, industries, civic clubs and families that donated the scholarships presented them to the students at Wednesday’s ceremonies. Fifty-two students received the $1,000 Presidential Merit Awards, and 150 got $500 Academic Achievement Scholarships. In addition, 10 non-endowed scholarships totaling $5,425 in value were awarded.
