Make Christmas Gifts, Decorations In Class Offered At VGCC In Fall

If you would like to create your own innovative, inexpensive Christmas gifts and decorations this year, Vance-Granville Community College has just the class for you.

Creative Christmas Crafts will be offered for 10 weeks, beginning Sept. 22 and running through Nov. 24, Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9.

Melonie Roberson of Henderson, who has more than 10 years experience in making baskets and other decorative and gift items, will teach the course. She and a friend have recently begun a business to make and sell creative baskets called “by our 2 hands.”

Roberson listed numerous items students will learn to make in the class. These include gifts in a jar, gift bags from fabric and paper, wreaths, candlesticks, placemats, tree ornaments, keepsakes, dish towel dolls and many others that can be constructed from inexpensive materials. Many are quite functional, as well as being seasonally cheerful, she said.

On the first night of classes, Roberson will supply the materials needed for items to be made that evening. She will give each student a list of projects to be worked on during the duration of the class and the materials they will need for them.

“I’ll make each item to show the students how, and then I’ll be available to help them as they make their own,” Roberson said, adding that several items can be completed in each class session.

Cost of the class will be $37.50. For more information and to pre-register, call the VGCC Continuing Education office at (252) 738-3316.
