Greensboro Artist, Teacher To Judge Autumn Arts Juried Show At VGCC

The 2001 Autumn Arts Juried Art Show will be a return engagement for the judge, Este Rayle of Greensboro.

Cash prizes, merchandise and the prestigious Grumbacher Award will be awarded to winners selected by Rayle in the show, to be held Oct. 22-Nov. 15 at Vance-Granville Community College’s Civic Center.

This will be the 26th juried art show sponsored by the Kerr Lake Art Society, in cooperation with Vance-Granville Community College. Prizes are provided in part by Grass Roots funding from the N.C. Arts Council through the Vance County Arts Council.

Este Rayle has been drawing and painting since she can remember. She designed and drew newspaper fashion ads for local department stores when only a teen-ager in the late 1940s. Working in oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels, she has won numerous awards in art shows, many in Florida where she lived and worked many years. She is a past owner and director of Brass Rayle Studio, an art school and gallery in Miramar, Fla.

After gaining a reputation as an excellent teacher of artists, the Alexander Art Co. appointed Rayle to design and conduct their Certified Instructor Program. For several years, she conducted seminars from coast to coast, leading to hundreds of teachers becoming Alexander certified instructors.

First prize in the 2001 Autumn Arts show will be $500, second will get $250, and third will receive $100. In addition, Koh-l-Noor Inc. will provide the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award and a $200 merchandise certificate to the creator of the best art work in the show using at least 50 percent of Grumbacher products. Numerous merchandise prizes will be awarded, and purchase awards are also guaranteed from patrons of the show.

Art works must be original, produced within the past 12 months and not previously exhibited in a Kerr Lake Arts Society show. Artists may enter up to three pieces. A non-refundable entry fee of $10 for three pieces for society members and $15 for non-members will be charged.

Works may not exceed 36 inches per side, image size, and all work must be framed. Non-traditional work may be entered without a frame but must not exceed 36 inches a side, and must be equipped for hanging.

Artists should deliver their entries to the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Oct. 19-20. The college is located at Exit 209 off I-85 between Henderson and Oxford.

All works will be for sale, and patrons will select pieces they wish to buy during the judging. Sales to the public at the value specified on the artist’s entry card will be encouraged throughout the exhibit.

The Kerr Lake Arts Society and the Vance County Arts Council will host an opening reception in the Civic Center from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, for artists who enter pieces, people in the area with special interest in visual arts and for the news media. Winners will be announced at the reception, and all work entered will be displayed.

Entries will remain on display Oct. 22-Nov. 15 in the VGCC Civic Center from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays. Artists may pick up their work on Nov. 16.
