Garner and Coles stand out as VGCC basketball team tries to find its footing

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team continues to search for its first win of the season, but two Vanguards, sophomore Clarence Garner (pictured above, left) and redshirt freshman Josh Coles (pictured above, right), are standing out as leading contributors.

On Nov. 19, VGCC lost at home to area rival Louisburg College, by a score of 98-55. Garner, originally of Roanoke Rapids, led the Vanguards in scoring with 23 points. Meanwhile, freshman Lewis Bobbitt of Oxford grabbed 11 rebounds.

In VGCC’s 67-34 home loss to Guilford Technical Community College on Nov. 30, Garner was again the leading scorer, with 11 points, while Coles, the Danville, Va. native who had to sit out last season due to injury, contributed seven rebounds.

Garner and Coles scored 21 points apiece in a loss (89-63) to Pitt Community College at home on Dec. 3.

To date, Garner, Coles or both have been the top scorers in all but one of the six games of the 2011-12 season.

The loss to Pitt CC was the last game of 2011 for VGCC. After a break for the holidays, the Vanguards will return to the court to take on Rockingham CC on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. at home (Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson). Two other home games in January will feature the Vanguards facing off against Catawba Valley CC (Jan. 21 at 3 p.m.) and Sandhills CC (Jan. 28 at 3 p.m.).
