BARNES AAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED

Linda Stanley, president of the Vance County Unit of North Carolina Retired School Personnel, presents $3,000 to Vance-Granville Community College President Randy Parker to establish an Academic Achievement Scholarship in memory of James R. Barnes. The retired personnel will add $3,000 over the next three years to complete the endowment. Barnes began teaching in Vance County in the late 1930s, was principal at L.B. Yancey and Pinkston Street elementary schools and at Eaton-Johnson Junior High School and was also director of Henderson Head Start. The Vance retired school personnel also established an Academic Achievement award at VGCC in 1991 in memory of retired Henderson educator William D. Payne.
