Entries in Autumn Arts 2010, the 35th annual juried art show sponsored by Vance-Granville Community College and the Kerr Lake Art Society, have been judged and are on display at Vance-Granville. The public is invited to view the artwork on the second floor of Building 7 on the college’s main campus in Vance County through Nov. 5. Viewing hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.

For non-photographic artwork, Cheryl Hight of Louisburg took the top prize of $500 for her watercolor, “The Serbs’ Mizus.” Jaye Williamson of Oxford won second place (worth $250) with a work in pencil, called “Awakening,” while “Portrait of Ashley,” a pastel, won third place ($100) for artist M. Theresa Brown of Franklinton.

In the photography category, Sol Levine of Wake Forest came in first (receiving $150) for “Got One! (Great Blue Heron).” Brenda Keeter of Norlina took home the second-place ribbon ($75) for “Harvest Moon.” Gene Rooker of Norlina won third place ($50) with “Green Farm Sunset.”

This year’s judges were noted painter Tom Badger and Jaye Day-Trotter, an interior designer and president of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society. The judges awarded honorable mentions to several artists, including Susan Atwater of Louisburg, Kathy Shefchunas of Youngsville, Joseph Canfield of Henderson, Laurie Stephens of Oxford, Karolyn Hawthorne of South Hill, Va., Linda Cash of Oxford, Stephen Filarsky of Franklinton, John Brassard of Oxford, Jennifer Patterson of Littleton, and Hight, for another work.

Visitors to the exhibit can also vote for their favorite piece of art. The “People’s Choice” winning artist, who will receive $50, will be announced Oct. 25.

This year’s Autumn Arts competition attracted approximately 90 entries from 33 professional and amateur artists, working in a variety of two-dimensional media, according to Lelia Brigham, the Kerr Lake Art Society’s president and a part-time VGCC art instructor who coordinates the event. “Our judges were very impressed by the quality of work submitted, and said it was one of the brightest, most colorful shows they had seen in years,” Brigham said. “They loved the detail they saw in the winning pieces.” For more information, call Lelia Brigham at (252) 492-5281 or Donna Dodson at (252) 738-3316.
