Artist To Teach Landscape Painting At VGCC

A local artist who has studied landscape painting with some of the country’s master painters will share his techniques with a personal enrichment class beginning at Vance-Granville Community College’s main campus on June 15.

Leonard F. Henderson, who teaches special education at Eaton-Johnson Middle School, has been a professional artist since 1963. He toured the nation, painting portraits at fairs and carnivals and, during his travels, studied with master painters like Lloyd Larsen and Steven Juhoras in Arizona.

“When I was not doing portraits, I did landscapes,” Henderson said. “I traveled throughout the United States and painted the diversity of scenery in the country in all seasons, from the Western mountains to New England pines to Southern kudzu.”

Since coming to Henderson, he has taught Continuing Education art classes at VGCC, with his most recent class concentrating on portraiture. In his next class, Henderson will pass along landscape techniques to his class, using oils, pastels or water colors. “These are all techniques that even new painters can adapt,” he said.

There will be 24 hours of class time, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays, June 15-Aug. 10. Tuition for the class is $30.

To pre-register, or for more information, call the Continuing Education office at (252) 492-2061, ext. 3316.

Artist Leonard Henderson paints one of the most familiar sights on the Vance-Granville Community College landscape – the gazebo by the campus pond. Henderson will teach a landscape painting class at the college, beginning June 15.
