Applications Being Taken For Next Basic Law Enforcement Training At VGCC

Men and women interested in becoming certified law enforcement officers may now apply for enrollment in the next Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) class to begin in January at Vance-Granville Community College.

BLET Class 75 will begin Jan. 6, 2003, and will run through May 9. Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to about 6 p.m. Monday-Friday on VGCC’s main campus in Vance County. Some weekend training is also necessary to complete in 15 weeks the 608 hours mandated by the state.

Students who complete the VGCC BLET training will take the North Carolina certification exam for law enforcement officers. The curriculum of the VGCC course was recently updated to meet current state regulations, and VGCC graduates have a high passing rate on the state exam.
Applicants for the BLET training must be 20 years or older, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and be sponsored by a law enforcement agency. The cost of the course averages $650, which includes books, uniforms and equipment.

The deadline for applying for the program is 12 noon, Dec. 20. Questions on the BLET program and requests for applications should be directed to Tony Pendergrass, VGCC law enforcement training director, at (252) 738-3263.
