21 Named College Transfer Scholars At VGCC 2001 Spring Convocation

Twenty-one students in the College Transfer program who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership qualities were named College Transfer Scholars at Vance-Granville Community College’s 2001 Spring Convocation May 2.

Dr. John Beck, chairman of the College Transfer program, said the Scholars program is the only award given at VGCC that is determined by a vote of the faculty. Candidates must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point-average in College Transfer and be nominated by two program faculty members. The Entire College Transfer faculty approves selectees.

Named College Transfer Scholars this year were Lisa Johnson Finch, Doris Fuller Jefferson, Jack Calvin Jenkins, Robin Collier Sanders and Jennifer Ann Sasser of Henderson; Christopher George O’Bannion of Kittrell; Olivia Renee Carteaux, Millard Scott Grant and Emily Greenwood of Oxford; Heather Cockman Morton of Stem; Barry Wayne Moore of Butner; Phillip Michael Brantley of Norlina; Lisa Flickinger Ferrell of Franklinton; Lucy Danielle Jones of Youngsville; Charles G. Kroll of Bunn; David W. Nunamaker of Louisburg; and Christopher Alan Aument, Jonathan Alan Garner, Nathaniel Williams Garner, Elizabeth Annette Holland and Robert Ashley Jenkins of Wake Forest.

Dr. Beck also named Gloria C. Freeman, a psychology instructor, as winner of the Chairman’s Award for excellence in instruction.

Beck cited Freeman, who has been at VGCC seven years, for her sponsorship of the Cultural Diversity Club on campus, for developing an online Web course and for her activities with the North Carolina State Chapter of the Southern Regional Council on Black American Affairs. Freeman coordinated the annual NCSCCBAA Student Leadership Development Conference at VGCC April 27, which was attended by about 80 area students.

Since its establishment at Vance-Granville in the 1970s, Beck said the College Transfer program has grown steadily. The number of students graduating from the program this year will probably be the highest ever, he said.

He said that a report he receives annually from the University of North Carolina system show that transfer students from VGCC score significantly higher than the system average.

Beck also lauded the College Transfer faculty of 33 full-time instructors and about 70 part-time. About half the full-time instructors have developed Web courses, providing an important supplement online to classroom instruction. He also noted the community involvement of faculty members, including mentoring at Dabney Elementary School and participating in the Guardian-Ad-Litem program of the courts.
