This course is a competency-based training program designed to provide students with enhanced career opportunities in manufacturing. Students are introduced to the basic concepts of manufacturing by emphasizing the importance of quality and its role in company profitability and job sustainability. The Fundamentals course includes training in core concepts such as manufacturing concepts, measurements and math, teamwork and communications, and problem solving.

Working Smart is a soft-skills program developed by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Workforce Developmental Partners (CMWDP). It is designed to provide job-seekers the work and life skills that enhance employee productivity. Employers are looking for candidates who have the “soft-skills” that lead to success in the following ways: communication, problem solving skills, time management, accountability, and more. Requires Working Smart certified instructors and utilization of the Working Smart curriculum.
OSHA 10 Lab: 12 hours
This course covers the fundamentals and procedures of the Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout-Tagout) standard issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) related to the control of hazardous energy, and the importance of energy control and isolation in the safe service and maintenance of equipment. Topics include lockout-tagout practices used to disable machinery or equipment to prevent the release of hazardous energy from electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal and other energy sources while employees perform servicing and maintenance activities.
Forklift Operation and Safety: 6 hours
Participants successfully completing this course will be eligible for the forklift operator’s license. Topics to be presented include basic design of lift trucks, stabilization of trucks, maintenance, repair costs and safety aspects in operation.
BioWork Process Technician: 12 hours
This course is designed to provide basic preparation for entry-level process technician jobs in bioprocess manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing and chemical manufacturing. Course competencies include understanding the role of a process technician, safety, quality processes, measuring process variables, transforming matter, process technology (including processing equipment and plant utilities), controlling the process, maintaining sterile processes and growing living cells. (This will only include an introduction to Bio-Manufacturing Practices.)
Math for Manufacturing: 12 hours
This course is designed for instructional areas related to basic workplace math skills.
(Math principles and practices with exercises.)
MS Specialist I (Word): 3 hours
This course introduces computer applications. Topics include word processing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of computers and use the computer to solve problems.
MS Specialist II (Excel): 3 hours
This course introduces computer applications. Topics include spreadsheet creation and use. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of computers and use the computer to solve problems.
Employability Skills Training: 12 hours
Students will participate in activities that: (1)focus on their assets and limitations, (2)help to develop a positive self-concept, (3)help to develop teamwork skills, (4)professionalism, (5)communication skills, (6)problem solving skills, and (7) will focus on the awareness of the impact of information technology in the workplace. Students will each develop and write a resume and there will be specific instructional time focused on interviewing.
Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt: 12 hours
This course introduces students to the concept of lean manufacturing as a means of waste reduction. Topics include the examination of manufacturing operations and the incorporation of lean techniques to reduce waste, cost, time, and materials in manufacturing processes. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of lean manufacturing systems and how they benefit the environment and business.
HRD (Human Resources Development) Employment Readiness
This course provides employability skills training for unemployed and underemployed adults. The curriculum addresses each of the six core HRD components: (1) assessment of an individual’s assets and limitations, (2) development of a positive self-concept, (3) development of employability skills, (4) development of communication skills, (5) development of problem-solving skills, and (6) awareness of the impact of information technology in the workplace.
All students should demonstrate an understanding of- Communication, Career Planning, Team Building/ Teamwork, Problem solving and Critical Thinking, Goal setting for employment, Resume completion, strong interview skills and use this knowledge to be able to successfully enter the workforce.
