Two sophomore standouts on the Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards women’s volleyball team were recently recognized with honors by coaches in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X, at an awards banquet held in conjunction with the conference tournament. Stormi Abernathy of Leasburg was named to the All-Region Second Team, while Hannah Arneth of Oxford received an Honorable Mention for the All-Region team.
Jessica Smith of Roxboro has been named the head coach for the women’s volleyball team at Vance-Granville Community College.
Smith has played volleyball for 20 years and earned All-Conference honors while playing for Manteo High School. She then continued her playing career at Pitt Community College, which, like VGCC, competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association, but in a different division.
For the Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards, the 2016 women’s volleyball season will long be remembered as historic. VGCC compiled a winning record (14-8) in the regular season, reached .500 in conference play (6-6), and won a match in the postseason — all for the first time in the history of the program.
