VGCC Welding student receives scholarship through American Welding Society

Quentin T. Tully of Raleigh, a Welding Technology student at Vance-Granville Community College, recently received a scholarship from the American Welding Society Foundation.

Tully was awarded a $1,000 Praxair Limited Scholarship, after being selected by the Triangle section of the American Welding Society (AWS).

Praxair is a Fortune 250 company and the largest industrial gases company in North and South America. The company partnered with AWS to create the scholarship to help address the shortage of welders in the United States, and to improve access to scholarship dollars for students pursuing a career in welding.

The American Welding Society is a nonprofit organization with a global mission to advance the science, technology and application of welding processes. The AWS Foundation was founded in 1989 to support education initiatives in welding and related technologies.

“I would like to thank the AWS Triangle Section for selecting me to receive the Praxair Limited Scholarship,” Tully said. “The money will help so much to aid me in my future as a welder and a student.”

Tully added that his VGCC instructors, program head Rusty Pace and Luke Gravel, learned about the scholarship opportunity from an official at a local employer, Altec Industries of Creedmoor. The faculty asked Tully to apply in part because of his strong academic record. He has received President’s List and Dean’s List honors while enrolled in the program, and also received an endowed academic scholarship from VGCC.

Tully is scheduled to graduate from the college at the end of the spring 2017 semester with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Welding Technology . VGCC has offered a three-semester diploma program in Welding for more than 40 years but added the two-year degree option in 2015.
