VGCC Vanguards defeat Guilford Tech

The Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards men’s basketball team recorded a third Region X conference victory of the season on Feb. 1, beating the Titans of Guilford Tech Community College in Greensboro by a score of 98-76.

The Vanguards built a 49-37 lead by halftime and followed that with an almost identical second half score of 49-39 to dominate the home team.

VGCC sophomore Alcyone Moore of Charlotte had the best game of his college career, leading his team in scoring with 35 points, going 6 for 6 from the free-throw line, and posting eight rebounds. Tyrek Beverly of Oxford put up 17 points. Ty’Quon Reid of Durham led in steals, with five, while also contributing 14 points. Raekwon Hall of Raleigh achieved the rare triple-double, with 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 12 points. Donal Gooch of Raleigh likewise recorded 10 rebounds while scoring nine points.

The VGCC road win came on the heels of a conference loss at home to Catawba Valley Community College, 80-62, on Jan. 27. In that game, Hall was the leading Vanguard scorer, with 20 points plus a pair of rebounds. Beverly put up 14 points and eight rebounds. Gooch led in rebounding, with 13, while also contributing nine points, and four blocks. Reid had six points, three assists and three steals.

The Vanguards have three more games scheduled at home for the regular season: Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m., versus reigning national champion Richard Bland College; Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., versus Pitt Community College; and Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., versus Guilford Tech.

All games are at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson, and admission is free.
