VGCC reschedules Summer Bridge program

The new Vance-Granville Community College program for incoming first-year students, “Summer Bridge,” is still accepting applications and has been rescheduled for July 18-29.

The Summer Bridge program is a two-week (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) intensive series of activities designed to help new students prepare to meet the challenges of college before the fall semester begins in August.

Participants must first apply to VGCC, take the North Carolina Diagnostic and Placement (NC DAP) test and place into developmental math or English. They must be North Carolina residents, high school or high school equivalency graduates, and entering first-time college students.

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a $150 stipend to be applied to their VGCC accounts to pay for tuition and other college expenses for the Fall 2016 semester.

Most VGCC students take placement tests as part of the admissions process to evaluate their current skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Placement test scores are used for academic advising and correct course placement. Through the Summer Bridge, students will be prepared for the opportunity to retake the required placement test and place out of all or some of the required prerequisite courses in developmental math or English. They will also be introduced to many program options, career planning services and academic advising to help them make informed choices about their path toward a career.

The program will offer students individualized preparation for the placement test; introductions to VGCC programs; one-on-one meetings with academic and career coaches; skill-building workshops on time management, communication and problem-solving; and overviews of important resources like financial aid, tutoring, and career services. Games and prizes will provide a fun, engaging atmosphere to help students gain confidence as they begin their college experience. Lunch will also be provided every day from area restaurants.

With support from AT&T North Carolina, the program will be available at no cost to participating students.
