VGCC launches online scholarship application

A new online system is now available for Vance-Granville Community College students to apply for scholarships established by local citizens and businesses through the college’s Endowment Fund.

The online application can be accessed at scholarships.vgcc.edu . To use the system, a student must already be admitted to VGCC and have been assigned a username and password, which they also use for other online college services.

Using software from AcademicWorks, Inc., VGCC Endowment Office staff have set up an application that asks students to answer a series of questions and to write a short personal statement, just as the former paper applications required.

“This new online application is going to improve efficiency and sustainability, both for students and for our staff,” said VGCC Endowment Director Eddie Ferguson. “The application also helps us to quickly match a student with a particular scholarship, based on the expressed wishes of the donors.” Some scholarships were established with the intention of supporting students in a particular program of study, while others were designed for a student from a particular county, to cite just two examples. “We are excited to have this new tool to help students obtain the support they need to achieve professional and personal success,” Ferguson added.

To be considered for scholarships for the academic year that starts in August, students must apply by July 15.

Through the Endowment Fund, VGCC has awarded more than 8,000 scholarships to students since 1982. Scholarships have been established by individuals, businesses, civic groups, churches and the college’s faculty and staff to assist deserving students.
