Learn & Earn FAQs

  1. Do all Learn and Earn students in the same lab have to take the same course?
No...students in the lab may be taking a variety of courses during the same class period unless specified by the high school.

  2. Can students take more than one Learn and Earn course?
Yes...students may take as many as their schedule allows, and in which they meet the prerequisites.

  3. Can students take a Learn and Earn class and a Dual Enrolled or Huskins class during the same semester?
Yes...if their schedule accommodates and the high school is agreeable.

  4. If a student is enrolled in two or more high school programs - Huskins, Dual, or Learn and Earn, what should be indicated as the program of study?
The college can only recognize one program of study in a given semester. Generally, if the student will enroll in a Learn and Earn course, that should be indicated as their program of study above Huskins or Dual Enrollment.

  5. Are high school students guaranteed a space as a Learn and Earn, Dual Enrolled, or Huskins student?
No...most course prerequisites are established at the state level and cannot be waived. All classes have a maximum capacity. Early planning discussions and request by high schools increase the likelihood of accommodating most students into classes.

  6. Can a student sign up for Learn and Earn without the approval of the high school?
No...the high school must be involved and provide the computer lab, the facilitator, and textbooks.

  7. Is Learn and Earn available to private school students and home school students?
The N.C. General Assembly Session Law 2009-451 states, "high school students attending a non-public school may enroll in any Learn and Earn Online course with space available that has been offered to but not filled by any eligible public school student." Non-public students taking Learn and Earn classes are exempt from tuition, but must supply their own textbooks and other instructional materials.

  8. Can a high school student withdraw from a Learn and Earn class?
Yes...Students may withdraw from the class by sending an e-mail to their instructor requesting to be withdrawn from the class. This must be done by the published date for withdrawals in the college's registration procedures for that term. Withdrawing from the class by the published deadline will result in a non-punitive grade on the college transcript. However, students should consult with their high school guidance counselor prior to withdrawing concerning implications related to their high school grade for the course.
