Dean's Message

Vance-Granville's Arts and Sciences Division has a positive reputation within the local community as well as across the state of North Carolina. The division includes the following degree areas: Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in General Education, Bioprocess Technology, Early Childhood Education, and School-Age Education. Many classes are offered via the traditional classroom setting as well as online. Some classes can also be taken at one or more of our satellite campuses which are located in Franklin, Granville, and Warren counties.

Overall, enrollment in the division's degree programs continues to grow. Each year dozens of VGCC students transfer to four-year universities. As a matter of fact, most VGCC students who transfer actually outperform the native students of those universities. In addition to the foregoing programs, the division offers general education courses for students in the college's other two divisions, the Division of Business and Applied Technologies and the Division of Health Sciences. In order to meet the demands of our growing student population, we now have approximately fifty full-time faculty and sixty adjunct faculty in the Arts and Sciences Division.

Growing enrollment is only one of the major highlights of the division. Another is the dedicated faculty within the Arts and Sciences Division. Our faculty work very hard to ensure that all of our students receive a quality education. It is the goal of the division to ensure that students who wish to transfer to four-year institutions are prepared for academic success. On the other hand, it is also our goal to ensure that students who will be entering their chosen professions upon graduation from VGCC are prepared for the workforce. Collectively, the courses offered in the division help to build students' writing skills, communication skills, mathematical and science skills, technological skills, multicultural skills, and critical thinking skills. In order to be able to provide a quality education for the college's students, the faculty of the Arts and Sciences Division are willing to go above and beyond to stay abreast of their fields of study. Many attend workshops and conferences throughout the year while others travel abroad in order to gain insight into the educational technologies and advancements of other countries. Yet, others have authored and co-authored written publications in their respective fields.

There are numerous extracurricular activities sponsored by Arts and Sciences faculty. Some of our annual events include drama productions, music performances, an Earth Day Celebration, and Farm Day. Clubs and organizations within the division include the following: Phi-Theta Kappa National Honor Society, Drama Club, Spanish Club, History Club, Ecology Club, Literacy Club, Bio-Pharm Tech Club, and the Student Association of N.C. Association of Educators.

Finally, we are extremely proud of alumni. Our graduates have proven to be successful both inside and outside of the classroom. As previously mentioned, VGCC's college transfer graduates have a proven success record at four-year colleges and universities. Many of our other graduates have moved on to hold successful careers in their professions. The overall success of our students is what motivates us to provide a quality education that compares to no other!
