Tells Graduates To Pursue Happiness

The Community College System has come to represent what is right about society and life at the beginning of the 21st century, North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall said at Vance-Granville Community College Aug. 6.

Speaking at the summer graduation at VGCC, Marshall said, “People talk a lot about what’s wrong with the world today, but Vance-Granville Community College and this educational community you each belong to, represents much of what is truly good in modern society.”

Marshall spoke to a standing-room-only crowd in the Civic Center, who had come to applaud the 254 men and women who received associate degrees, diplomas and certificates at the second graduation of the year. On May 12, 407 degrees and diplomas were awarded at spring graduation.

“Here on this campus we see fairness and a commitment to education for all, no matter what,” Marshall said. “Learning here is focused. It has meaning and purpose. The skills and education you have gained at this wonderful place are tools that you will use to build a better life for you, and a better community for all the rest of us,” she told the graduates.

Quoting the opening sentence of the Declaration of Independence, Marshall emphasized the final right of people declared in the statement – “the pursuit of happiness.” She said, “As a student here, you’ve been on what I’d call ‘the pursuit of professionalism’ and, with a little luck, that’s made you happy as well.”

Urging the graduates to direct their lives toward achieving happiness, Marshall told them of personal setbacks she had suffered in her life. “Education, preparation and staying positive made the difference – the difference between those things being stumbling blocks or stepping stones,” she said.

“So please keep on turning over those stumbling blocks in your own pursuit of happiness and turn them into stepping stones as you improve your own lives,” she said. “You will stumble. Enthusiastic people get bruised knees. When you pursue life enthusiastically, you don’t just go from one success to another. You stumble, you learn to put on a bandage and move on.”

Quoting Susan B. Anthony, who Marshall called one of her personal heroes, she said, “Failure is impossible in your life if you live it with enthusiasm.”

Among those receiving high school equivalency diplomas were sisters Annie Cheek, 47, and Hessie Cheek, 48, of the Dabney community of Vance County. They are the last of 12 brothers and sisters to earn similar diplomas. Their mother and many other relatives were on hand to witness their happy achievement.

VGCC President Robert A. Miller also made brief remarks and awarded the degrees and diplomas. Vice President Fred H. Wilson Jr. presented the candidates for graduation, assisted by Marsha Nelson, dean of curriculum, and Leo Kelly Jr., dean of continuing education.
