Literacy Online: Getting Started
How to get started in AHS and GED
Adult High School Software
First Make Sure Online is Right for You
Ask yourself these questions to see if this is right for you :
- Are you willing to work online a minimum of 12 hours per week?
- Can you use computers without assistance (see next 2 questions)?
- Can you install software and modify Internet Explorer software options?
- Are you experienced in sending and receiving email with attachments?
- Are you self-motivated and able to work without much instructor assistance?
- Are you persistant when it comes to getting answers to your questions?
- Are you pursuing your GED or Adult High School Diploma because YOU want it?
If you answered "yes" to ALL 7 questions above, then you may be a good candidate for completing this phase of your education in an online environment. GED may be the encouraged alternative for any student needing 5 or more credits to complete high school. Continue with the steps below:
Steps for Getting Started
- If you 16 or 17 years old, the first step is to attend a Minor Info Session.
- If you are 18 or older or have been approved to attend as a minor, you need to then take the literacy placement test (TABE) before continuing with any other step. The available locations and times for the placement tests are shown below. Tell examiner that you want to work "online":
- Main Campus (Henderson) - Thursday, 6:00 PM, and Friday, 9:00 AM, Bldg 7, Room 7211
- South Campus (Creedmoor) - Tuesday, 6:00 PM, Room 134 (verify with front office)
- Franklin County Campus (Louisburg) - Friday, 8:15 AM, Building 5, Room 5114
- Warren County Campus (Warrenton) - Friday, 8:30 AM, Building 2, Room 202
- For entry into our Adult High School Diploma program online, you will need to be "Reading" at a 9th grade or higher level based on your TABE score. You will also need to obtain an official (sealed) copy of your high school transcript and provide it to the Literacy Online Coordinator/Instructor for evaluation. Continue with step 5 below.
- For entry into our GED program online, you will need to be "Reading" at a 9th grade or higher level based on your TABE score (You may be allowed to begin your GED program "Reading" at a 7th grade level but will be required to be at a 9th grade level before taking any official practce or actual GED test). Continue with step 5 below.
- Plan to attend an Information and Registration Session for Literacy Online. No appointment is required, but you must complete the literacy placement testing (TABE) before atteding the session. At this session, the programs offered will be fully explained, any software needed to to install on your home computer will be provided, and you will be completing the registration process for your selected program.
- Two critical expectations are that you work online 12 or more hours per week and keep your program registrations and placement testing up-to-date. See Student Expectations for more information regarding these and other responsibilities.
