Literacy Online Header

All of us in Literacy Education at Vance-Granville Community College welcome you to ourRace for Literacy Online Logo campus in cyberspace. Our goal is to provide support and encouragement to move you toward successfully meeting your personal education goals. This distance learning program fully supports the North Carolina Community College System's statewide public awareness campaign, Race 4 Literacy: Helping Adults Learn.

Our focus is on facilitating your recovery of high school credits necessary for obtaining your high school diploma, your completion of a GED program, or your satisfactory conclusion of some other personal educational endeavor. Our concept of distance learning comes from the desire of working people (or those persons for which traditional school settings will not work) to still fulfill individual needs for improving your station in life. The program is tuition free to any student who does not have a high school diploma.

If you are ready to get started, begin by contacting us by email at literacy@vgcc.edu to schedule attendance at one of the Information and Registration Sessions at our Main Campus. We will help you decide for yourself if distance learning is right for you and launch you on your way to better opportunities.

What Is the Objective of Literacy Online?

The objective of Literacy Online is to provide educational opportunities primarily for adults 18 years or older and for certain other persons who have by the necessities of life taken on various adult responsibilities. The program addresses the needs of these persons who lack sufficient mastery of basic skills to enable them to function as effectively as possible in society. Literacy Online expands the opportunities for a subset of potential students to address these skill issues outside of a traditional classroom environment through the use of the Internet and computer technology.

What Is Distance Learning?

Some view distance learning as an easy way to accomplish a task or a good way to fit the completion of their education into an otherwise busy schedule. Online Learning is a convenient method of instruction for learning new skills. Web-based training can be accessed at your computer at work or at home, any day, anytime. Distance learning is NOT an easy way but does put the student more in charge of their education. One of the first steps is to determine if a distance learning program would match your individual learning style.

Some of the questions you need to answer for yourself are:

  • Are you comfortable with using computers in general, using the Internet, and using e-mail?
  • Do you like to work and learn independently? This program requires significant initiative and self-discipline.
  • Are you someone who can stay focused and get your work done on time without the need for constant reminders?
  • Are you comfortable with a course that involves a great deal of reading without face-to-face explanations from an instructor?
  • Are you persistent in getting answers to questions about material you do not understand?
If you answered "yes" to most of the questions above, then this program is probably a good match for you.

Contact us at literacy@vgcc.edu for more information regarding the program or the educational assessment and to schedule your attendance at an Information and Registration Session.

What Will Be Expected of Me?

(Click here for Detailed Student Expectations)

All Students:
You will be expected to intially take an academic assessment and attend one of the scheduled Information and Registrations Sessions. You will be periodically assessed ensuring that you have current placement test scores (not older than 6 months) for each semester you wish to be enrolled. You will also be expected to (1) take full responsibility for installing any required software on your home computer, (2) maintain a personal e-mail account during the entire period you are a student, (3) re-register by the beginning of each subsequent semester you wish to be enrolled, (4) be online and working on lessons for a minimum of 12 hours per week and (5) be progressing adequately in your online training in your selected educational program. Even though personal situations may contribute to brief interruptions, students are personally responsible for their own success in completing their educational program in a timely manner. Therefore, to remain in their program, students are expected to be actively engaged for a minimum of 12 hours for each contiguous 30 day period during each semester with no unwarranted periods of extended inactivity, to be making adequate progress in assigned courses, and to complete assigned work and associated exams by the end of the semester. All exams and Official Practice Tests will be taken at the Main Campus on one of the scheduled exam dates. Actual GED Testing will be scheduled separately. We want you to be successful and will fully support you in that endeavor.

New Students:
Students desiring enrollment in one of our Literacy Online programs but not reading at a 9th grade level can expect to be assigned lessons designed to improve reading skills. The objective is to first raise those reading skills to a 9th grade or better level. A similar program will also be available to provide improvement in basic math skills. A reading level of less than 7th grade is unacceptable for enrollment in any online high school or GED program.

If required for your program, you will need to have your AHS software or GED software loaded within 1 week of your attendance at the Information and Registration Session. You will be given 2 additional weeks to complete any orientation phase of your training. GED students will then begin preparations for GED Testing, and high school students will then be assigned their first course to complete during the first semester in our program. Courses must be completed in the semester assigned.

Returning/Continuing High School Students:
High school students should obtain at least 2 credits each semester (1 credit during summer semester). You may be allowed to pursue more than 2 credits in any given semester. You will only be allowed to take one course at a time.

How Do I Get the Software to be Loaded on My PC ?

You will receive additional information at the Information and Registration Session. You may obtain and load software in accordance with the information at the following link, but it will be of no value to you until you are officially registered (the student must send an email confirming installation is complete before being registered in AHS or GED software system):
