Graduation (May and August)

Graduation exercises and associated diplomas for Adult High School and GED are only available in May and August each year. Graduation exercises are not available for college (curriculum) or literacy programs in December. Diplomas will be dated for the scheduled graduation date regardless of when the student completes their program. Click here to see the college schedule which includes graduation dates.

To participate in graduation exercises, the student must apply with a form available from their instructor. The deadline for submitting the application to the college Business Office along with $15.00 in May for an August graduation and in January for a May graduation. The $15.00 covers the cost of a diploma. To march in the exercise requires the purchase of a cap and gown at additional cost, which is available from the college bookstore, not later than 6 weeks prior to the ceremony.

Register Early for College - Do Not Delay!

Students who wish to continue on in college need to sign up as early as possible. As soon as you can project a completion date, you should start the application process. It is NOT necessary to have completed your Adult High School or GED program before submitting your application for college. The application process takes time - application, request for financial aid, and placement testing for college entry all must be accomplished before you can start college.

Extended Inactivity May Terminate Software Access

Students who are serious about completing their education will work deligently, putting in enough hours to accomplish their goals. Students choosing to put in less than a minimally acceptable amount of time may be terminated until they are willing to apply an appropriate level of effort as measured by time online and completion of lessons. Additionally, the GEDONLINE system automatically terminates anyone who has been inactive for 4 months or longer.

Placement Testing Requirements Changed

Unrestricted involvement in our high school or GED programs require the student to be at or above a 9th grade level as measured by standardized testing, such as the TABE, in all tested areas (Reading, Math, and Language skills). Students not meeting this requirement will be expected to particpate in classes designed to move them toward the 9th grade level in those areas.

GED students must be reading at a 9th grade level before they will be allowed to take actual GED testing in Reading, Science, and Social Studies. Likewise, a 9th grade level is required in math and language before taking the actual tests in Math and Writing, respectively. High school students will not be allowed to graduate scoring less that 9th grade in any area in which course work completion was a part of their high school program with us.

Competency Testing and/or taking the SAT or ACT

Most Adult High School students have already completed competency requirements in Reading and Math prior to starting with us. Students not meeting those requirements upon entry into our program must take the required testing as a part of their graduation requirements.

Vance-Granville does not offer either the SAT or the ACT required by many college for entering Freshmen. If needed by the college of your choice, you must make arrangements to take the tests at one of the local high schools.

How do I sign up for completing my High School or obtaining my GED on line?

Go to the How to get Started page, look at the questions to see if an online program is best for you. If you think it is the best route for you or find that it is the only practical way to complete your educationand, then follow the "Steps for getting Started" to initiate your involvement in one of our online programs.

What kind of computer do I need at home to use be able to do my high school or GED online?

The brand of a Windows-based computer doesn't matter. The A+ software we use may also make use of Apple computers; however, the McGraw-Hill software can only be used with an Apple computer using a Windows emulation. Therefore, any Windows-based computer system will work as long as it has enough memory and speed to run your selected operating system (Windows 98SE, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or the MS Vista operating system). You will need a connection to the Internet, preferably a high speed connection such as Road Runner or DSL. A dial-up connection will work but may get to be frustrating due to its slow speed.

My GED Online program will not load. What is the problem?

The first solution is to make sure your computer is set up properly. To do that go to an A+ software page and following instruction for setting up Internet Explorer on your computer. Go to the GED Software page for instructions for loading and running the GED software after you have completed the Internet Explorer set up. Another problem is that on some computers the GEDONLINE application will not "launch" Internet Explorer. In that case, you will need to bring up the Internet Explorer first and then go to www.mhcgedonline.com. This will get you to a login screen. If these solutions do not work for you, contact us for additional help.

I went back through the lesson material online, but I failed the test and have to take it again.  What can I do to improve my chances to pass the quizzes (tests) and the final exam?

Take notes!! We cannot over-emphasize the need to take notes. We gave you examples of how to take notes during our Information and Registration Session.

When I have difficulties with my lessons that cannot be answered using email or over the phone, is face-to-face instructor assistance available?

Yes, by appointment.  We will be glad to provide personal assistance when other avenues of instructional assistance have been exhausted.

I was working in A+ (or MHC's GEDONLINE) and the system dropped my connection.  What happened?

If you are on dial-up and your phone system has the Call Waiting feature active, you must disable Call Waiting before using the Internet.  If someone calls you while online, the Call Waiting feature will cause a momentary interruption which will disconnect you from these systems -- you have no choice at this point but to get off the Internet, disable Call Waiting, and log in again.

I cannot seem to log into either A+ or GEDONLINE.  What do I do now?

If you have been working OK in the chosen program, it is most likely that your Internet Explorer setup was modified or you have accidently entered the wrong Login ID and/or Password. If these conditions are not the problem, please contact us for further assistance. We will try to help you solve your problem and get you going again.

I followed the instructions to setup Internet Explorer, but I still cannot log in.  What is the problem?  Have I done something wrong?

The first step is to close out and restart Internet Explorer to enure that the changes you entered have been accepted by Internet Explorer. If that does not work, then you should reboot (restart) your computer and try to log in again.    If you are still having a problem, contact us preferably by email.  Broadband (DSL & Road-Runner) users rarely have a problem once their computer is set up.  Dial-up users may encounter a problem with their internet provider "blocking" certain applications from accessing the Internet.  If you can freely access the Internet and have Internet Explorer on your desktop, software should run satisfactorily, but contact us for assistance.
