Detailed Student Expectations

Since you are embarking on completing your education with Vance-Granville Community College, we must assume that you are serious about completing your education and "getting on with the rest of your life." For that reason, we want to ensure that you are fully advised of our expectations of you while you are pursuing your high school diploma or GED.

The following are the detailed primary responsibilities and expectations of each student in our Adult High School or GED programs:

Program installation and startup ..............

  • As a Literacy Online student, you have full responsibility to ensure your computer is sufficient to support the required software, is properly connected to the Internet (a high-speed connection is preferred), and is correctly loaded with the required software.
  • Students will be given 2 weeks to install, logon, and have completed a minimum of 12 active hours using the program software. We will provide some assistance to help you get going with your online lessons. However, you have the ultimate responsibility to meet this requirement. If your home computer becomes unavailable to you, the computers in the Literacy labs, if available, may be used.
  • The login for students failing to meet this initial installation and active 12 hour requirement will be blocked and must contact the program coordinator or instructor to regain access to the online program.
  • Since the primary means of communications with students is by email, all students must have and maintain a valid email address to participate in the Literacy Online program.

Course/Credit Completions ................

  • High school students will generally only be allowed to pursue 1 credit/course at a time and must complete that course within the semester assigned. Once one course is completed, another credit/course may be assigned. The student should obtain at least 2 credits each semester (1 credit during summer semester). There is no limit to the number of courses completed during any given semester. New courses would normally not be assigned within 4 weeks of the end of a semester. The student is responsible for completing courses based on the contents of the associated syllabus. The syllabus will specify assignments to be completed including offline assignments which may not be identified otherwise within the lessons, such as project papers, research papers, essays, literary reviews, and other similar items to be turned into the instructor for grading.
  • GED students are expected to prepare themselves, take appropriate "Official Practice Tests," and pass a minimum of two (2) actual GED test each semester. The student is responsible for knowing the schedule for the needed GED tests and being on-time for testing when scheduled, and always bring the appropriate identification.  Students coming to tests without appropriate identification (which includes a photo ID) will NOT be allowed to test.
  • The students must not share their student ID and password with anyone and must personally complete all course work. Once completed, the student will contact their instructor to schedule an appointment for taking the final exam (high school) or the Official Practice Test (GED).
  • Students who do not complete any courses or GED tests during the semester enrolled may be denied access to their program during the next semester. Any high school courses not finished one semester may have to started over from the beginning in subsequent semesters. Students taking more than 6 months to complete a course will be given a "failing" grade unless that student officially withdraws from the course before the end of the 6-month period.

Registrations and Time online .............

  • All Literacy Online students must be registered prior to being given access to the selected program and must personally re-register for each semester in which the student desires to participate in the program. The student may pre-register up to 30 days prior to the end of a current semester for enrollment in the next semester. Placement test scores should not be older than 6 months at the time of registration. However, scores over 1 year old are no longer valid.
  • Literacy Online students are expected to spend at least 12 hours per week in their selected program. Failure to do so may result in that student being blocked or temporarily denied access to the online program.
  • A student will complete a minimum of 12 hours in the appropriate subject matter prior to being administered an exam (high school) or Official Practice Test (GED).
  • Any student not averaging a minimum of 12 hours per week for any month during the enrolled semester may be denied online program access during the next semester. These students have the option of enrolling in class at one of our 4 campuses.
  • Any student not active in their program for 14 consecutive days will immediately be removed from and denied access to the online program. These students have the option of enrolling in class at one of our 4 campuses.

Placement Testing ...................

  • Placement test (TABE) scores govern access to high school and GED courses and will dictate whether or not remediation is require before continuing. The critical scores are in Reading and Math. High school level tests scores in "reading" are required to participate in the online program. Those testing at a less than high school level in "reading" will be referred to the Literacy lab (classroom) setting for remediation.
  • Placement tests may be given as frequently as necessary to identify achievement goals being met. However, any placement test score over 1 year old is no longer valid and requires immediate reassessment.

The minimum acceptable placement test scores are delineated as follows:

  • For all new online students, Reading scores must be at 9th grade level or higher. For all returning "active" online students with a lower than acceptable score to continue in their program, they will be given two months to raise their Reading score to the 9th grade level. Failure to reach a 9th grade Reading level will result in that students being removed from the online program; however, they will be given the opportunity to continue their education program in a literacy lab (classroom) setting until a 9th grade reading level is achieved.
  • A Reading score of 9th grade level or higher is required prior to taking any GED Official Practice Test or actual GED test. A Math score of 9th grade level or higher is required prior to taking any Math portion of the Official Practice Tests or actual GED tests. A Language score of 9th grade level or higher is required prior to taking and Writing portion of the Official Practice Tests or actual GED tests.
  • A Reading score of 9th grade level or higher on a "D-Level" or "A-Level" test is required prior to taking any Adult High School course. A Math score of 9th grade level or higher on a "D-Level" or "A-Level" test is required prior to taking any Adult High School Math course.
  • All students must have a Reading, Math, and Language score of 9th grade or higher to graduate from or complete their GED (using any level test) or Adult High School (using the "A-Level" or D-Level" test) program.
