Academic Assessment

Academic Assessment

All literacy programs require an academic assessment for each student prior to and periodically during active enrollment in those programs. This academic assessment may also be referred to as a placement test or as Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE). Assessments will generally be conducted every semester but must not be older than 6 months. We require that those individuals who are unrestricted in their enrollment in our Literacy Online programs already be reading at a 9th grade level as validated by the TABE assessment and that they maintain a 9th grade reading level or higher throughout their enrollement.

Academic assessments or placement testing is available at all 4 campuses. Students desiring to be tested at Vance-Granville's Main Campus in Henderson may do so any Thursday evening at 6:00 PM or Friday morning at 9:00 AM any week that Vance-Granville is open for students. This testiing will be conducted in Building 7, 2nd Floor, Room 7211. Students desiring to be tested at the Franklin County Campus (at Louisburg), the South Campus (at Creedmoor/Butner), or the Warren County Campus (at Warrenton) will need to contact the Literacy Program Coordinator at that campus to ascertain their specific testing time.

For those students desiring enrollment in one of our Literacy Online programs but not reading at a 9th grade level, they will be assigned to a literacy lab (classroom) to work on lessons designed to improve reading skills.  The objective is to first raise those reading skills to a 9th grade or better level.  A similar program will also be available to provide improvement in basic math skills.
