Unless specified otherwise, project papers shall be written using the MLA format, use a minimum of 3 referenced sources of information, and be at least 500 words in length but of sufficient length to provide the reader with a clear understanding of the point or points being made. Generally, no maximum length will be specified.
Project Paper #1 - Today, many people associate the Celts with Ireland , Scotland , and Wales , but they did not start out there. Write a paper outlining the history of the Celts, their relationship with the Roman Empire , and their impact on European culture. Explain why there is today such a concentration of Celts in Ireland and neighboring countries. Document your evidence supporting your claims in your paper.
Project Paper #2 - The Crusades ended before 1300; however, they had profound effect on European and Middle Eastern society. These effects are even seen in today's society. Write a paper on what and who initiated the Crusades, what brought it an end, and primary societal changes brought about by the Crusades. Document the evidence that you have found supporting your position.
Project Paper #3 - Historical discussion on slavery almost always focuses on the southern part of the United States ; although, there was significant slave trade practiced in the northern states as well. However, slavery was common and even crueler throughout the world for centuries before and during the time of slavery in the United States . Write a paper which focuses on where and why slavery was employed by many of the world's societies, the advantages realized by slave owners, and any eventual benefit (if any) to the slaves themselves. Include in your discussion, the advances in technology that can be attributed to former slaves and their descendents. Use documented evidence you have identified, if any, which supports your position on this subject.
Project Paper #4 - There is a commonality among many of the "native" societies, such as Indians, Aztecs, Incas, and Eskimos, inhabiting the Americas before 1500. Some of these societies were quite advanced. Where did they come from, what was this commonality, how did they get to the Americas , and what did they introduce to the Americas ? Write a paper answering these questions and document evidence that you have found supporting your position.
Project Paper #5 - Examine the cause and effect of World War I and World War II. From your findings, could you make a case proving that "history repeats itself"? Is there anything common about where and/or how they started? Write a paper answering these questions and document evidence that you have found supporting your position.
Project Paper #6 - There have been numerous "revolutions" throughout history with profound effect on life today. Pick one revolution (American, French, Scientific, Industrial, Political and Social, Glorious, and so forth) and write a paper on the cause and effects of your selected revolution. Support your position with documented evidence.
Project Paper #7 - Write a paper describing what you see as the greatest threat to society in the world, why is it a threat, what needs to be done to mitigate the effects of that threat, and what do you see as your role in combating that threat? Support your position with documented evidence.
Project Paper #8 - You may, with your instructor's permission, define another topic related to this course for your paper's subject. Use the same structure as established for the other papers identified above.
