The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical

and laboratory procedures.
Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, medical transcription, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.
Graduates of Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited medical assisting program may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) certification examination to become Certified Medical Assistants. VGCC´s Medical Assisting program is CAAHEP accredited and has an 100% passing rate on the AAMA Certification examination. Employment opportunities include physicians' offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments, and hospitals.
Potential applicants should follow the admissions requirements and specific deadlines available through the college admissions office. Suggested High School courses for individuals desiring a career as a Medical Assistant include advanced biology, algebra, keyboarding/computer applications.
As of January 2001 administration of the AAMA certification examination, applicants that have been found guilty of a felony or pleaded guilty to a felony will not be eligible to sit for the certification examination. Students may request the opportunity to submit written evidence/request for a hearing before the certifying board of the AAMA in order to obtain a waiver.
Program Outcomes:
- Students will exhibit good communication skills.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to apply legal HIPAA concepts as they apply to other cultures.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to perform aseptic specimen collection, to insure global competitiveness in the healthcare arena.
- Students will demonstrate the knowledge necessary for entry level position through the use of medical terminology as it relates to diseases.
- Students will use critical thinking skills as they relate to medical situations.
The Vance-Granville Community College Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (
www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (AAMAE).
