Medical Assisting Program
The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical
and laboratory procedures.Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, medical transcription, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.
Graduates of Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited medical assisting program may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) certification examination to become Certified Medical Assistants. VGCC´s Medical Assisting program is CAAHEP accredited and has an 100% passing rate on the AAMA Certification examination. Employment opportunities include physicians' offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments, and hospitals.
Potential applicants should follow the admissions requirements and specific deadlines available through the college admissions office. Suggested High School courses for individuals desiring a career as a Medical Assistant include advanced biology, algebra, keyboarding/computer applications.
As of January 2001 administration of the AAMA certification examination, applicants that have been found guilty of a felony or pleaded guilty to a felony will not be eligible to sit for the certification examination. Students may request the opportunity to submit written evidence/request for a hearing before the certifying board of the AAMA in order to obtain a waiver.

- Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills with consumers and co-workers in the role of medical assistant
- Use critical thinking to recognize, analyze, and solve problems related to administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures
- Understand and use policies and manuals related to administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures
- Perform mathematic calculations related to generating laboratory results and preparing and administering medications
- Demonstrate competency in the knowledge and skills required for entry level medical assisting practice
- Display professionalism by projecting a positive attitude, working as a team member and showing initiative and responsibility
- Practice in a legal and ethical manner

JOB DESCRIPTION
*MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
The Medical Assistant obtains a degree from a CAAHEP-accredited college program. To become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), the graduate of an accredited program must sit for and successfully pass a national certification exam, which is given every January, June, and October.
*JOB DUTIES
The entry-level Certified Medical Assistant may perform the following skills:
I. ADMINISTRATIVE
- Front desk reception.
- Answering phones and scheduling appointments.
- Greet patients, completion of registration forms, and give instructions.
- Filing and maintaining medical records.
- Filing and maintaining financial records.
- Preparing and typing correspondence.
- Processing, coding, and completing insurance claim forms.
- Processing mail.
- Purchasing and maintaining supplies and equipment.
- Performing computer skills in patient billing, transcription, scheduling, insurance claims, accounts receivable, and data base entry.
- Performing accounting, billing, and banking procedures.
- Arranging for hospital admissions and outside referrals for the physician.
- Calling prescriptions to the pharmacy for the physician.
- Communication skills using appropriate medical terminology.
- Following appropriate legal and ethical professional conduct>
- Measuring and recording vital signs
- Recording patient interview, history and chief complaint.
- Providing patient education with regards to office policies, medications, management
of diseased, home treatments and special diets. - Preparing patients for examinations and performing routine screen tests.
- Assisting the physician with exams and minor office surgery.
- Phlebotomy and collection of other lab specimens.
- Performing basic lab tests.
- Performing EKGs.
- Assisting with X-ray and Physical Therapy procedures.
- Preparing and administering medications with physician's authorizations.
- Change dressings, applying bandages, removing sutures and other first aid procedures.
- Using CPR skills when required.
- Maintaining supplies, equipment, stocking, and sterilizing instruments.
- Disposing of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.
- Practicing OSHA safety standards.
- Performing accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times.
Medical Assisting has been repeatedly reported as one of the most rapidly growing health care professions.
MedicalAssistants are cross-trained which is a plus for inpatient and outpatient facilities, because they assist other health care professionals with their duties both administratively and clinically. With management care plans continually purchasing and contracting with traditional health care facilities and offices, the Medical Assistant is the most versatile, efficient and cost effective employee.
