Veterans Educational Assistance

***Note: Veteran and eligible recipients may be required to provide DD214  Documentation if the Department of Veteran Affairs can not confirm that they are or will be a qualifying veteran.

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers educational assistance to veterans who contributed towards their education while on active duty; and attend an eligible institution for Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits for all chapters of the GI Bill

The following VGCC veterans and eligible dependents may be eligible to receive Veterans Educational Assistance:
  • Veterans
  • Disabled Veterans
  • That were discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability
  • Eligible Dependents
sons, daughters, wives, and husbands of deceased or totally and permanently disabled veterans whose death or disability occurred while in military service
  • Eligible Selective Reserves and the National Guard
  • Members of the Armed Forces must have entered active duty on or after July 1, 1985, and contributed toward their education under the Montgomery GI Bill

Veterans and eligible recipients enrolling in approved courses must:

  • Pursue the exact curriculum for your program listed in the VGCC catalog. To have classes certified outside of your program, you must present an In-Lieu of form to certifying official.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress, attendance and conduct for continuing eligibility of payments.
  • Records of progress are kept by the College on veteran and non-veteran students alike. Progress records are furnished at the end of each scheduled school term and will be evaluated to determine student's eligibility status.
  • Benefits are based on the number of credit hours per term in which an individual is enrolled.
  • To maintain Veteran Educational Assistance, veterans and eligible recipients must be enrolled at least:
    • Full Time:   12 or more credit hour
    • 3/4 Time:     9-11 credit hours
    • 1/2 Time:     6-8 credit hours

Note: Summer term is considered an accelerated term; therefore, the enrollment status is calculated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is generally 8 credit hours. Veterans and eligible recipients, once dropped or withdrawn from class(es), normally are not eligible for VA education assistance for that entire term.
