| Service-learning is an innovative teaching and learning strategy that integrates community service with academic instruction. By relating the learning objectives with the service objectives, all parties involved benefit. The student has specific objectives that relate to a curriculum and for which he/she receives academic credit. The learning objectives are dictated by community needs. These needs of the community are met while the student hopefully develops empathy, social responsibility, and a comprehension of their personal values. The program provides structured time for the student to reflect on their experience through journals and related reading. This reflection then leads to greater self-discovery and self-knowledge.
