Dean's Message
Your decision to extend your education beyond high school will ultimatelyBobby Van Brunt prove to be the best decision of your professional life. Quite simply, high school prepares you for a job and college prepares you for a career.

I know many of you have doubts about your ability to succeed in college. Perhaps you didn't do too well in high school or you're the first in your family to attempt a college education. But you know what? You're with the majority of your fellow students if you have those kinds of doubts. At Vance-Granville we will give you all the tools you need to achieve success; from counseling and tutoring to financial aid. Let me tell you why it is so important for you to succeed here.

There are major forces at work in the world today that are diminishing the value of a strictly high school education and greatly increasing the value of college/technical education. This is nothing to be scared of. In fact, this is something to be excited about as these forces are giving you unprecedented opportunities for success. The first force is globalization which gives skilled workers much more value as companies worldwide expand, relocate, or diversify toward sources of skilled workforces. Another force at play is technology that greatly increases the productivity of skilled workers and spins off new industries as it advances. Finally, demographics greatly impact young skilled workers as millions of the aging Baby Boomer generation are now beginning to retire from the workforce. This is creating an even wider chasm between available jobs and skilled workers to fill them. Students in technology programs will be the beneficiary of this demographic evolution.

I urge you to take advantage of these opportunities that you have. And I pledge that my staff and I will do everything we can to be sure you are getting those skills you need to achieve lifelong success. The important thing for you is to keep the future as your focus. Success can and will be yours.
