The division welcomes several new faculty members this school year. Gerald Young has joined the Computer Education program area. He recently retired from IBM in the Research Triangle after a long and successful career and is a valuable and welcome addition to the Computer Education staff, as is Yolanda Yoder who became a full-time instructor after teaching part time for VGCC previously. The Cosmetology program was bolstered with the hiring of Saundra Branch-Johnson as a full time instructor after several years of teaching part time. With the retirement of Tim Robinson and Antoinette Cousin's resignation to pursue new goals, we are happy to welcome Tony Clark and Krista Carlson to the staff of the Criminal Justice program. CPT Clark is a retired Henderson police detective who has been teaching part time for VGCC for several years. Krista comes to us with five years experience with the Wake Forest Police Department. Derrick Cameron is a new addition to the Business Administration program at the South campus and brings much business/financial experience with him. Walter Martin came on board Fall semester to run the new Global Logistics program. Walter is a retired Air Force logistician and has nine years of experience teaching logistics.
The Division is excited that its application for a new program, Entrepreneurship, has been approved by the North Carolina Community College System. This program will debut in Fall 2010 and will offer opportunity for students to learn how to bring that seed of a commercial idea into fruition. The program will fall under the umbrella of Business Administration which is headed by Carl Hann.
Last year we were excited by the introduction of public lunches prepared by our Culinary program. The excitement was well-founded as that service has become so popular that all of this Spring's twice-monthly lunches were sold out just two weeks after the schedule was announced. Chef Ross Ragonese is hopeful of extending the service so more people can experience fine international and classical American cuisine at the Vanguard Café located on the campus of the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford.
Phi Beta Lambda's membership has grown to 35 students. Even more impressively, the Professional Division membership of PBL is now at 40 and this leads the state1! Phi Beta Lambda is a business society promoting service, knowledge, and leadership opportunities for students taking business classes at VGCC. Congratulations to Latonya Steele, advisor; and to Walter Martin and Carl Hann, co-advisors in making this one of the most dynamic chapters in the entire state of North Carolina.
