It’s been a year of changes in the Business & Applied Technologies Division. We saw the Director over the Applied Technologies, Angela Gardner, named as interim Dean of Arts & Sciences and we regretted losing her, even if only temporarily. Her dual role as Program Head of Criminal Justice was ably filled by Criminal Justice instructor Andrea Ferguson. Criminal Justice continues to be an extremely popular major and has a large presence in the classroom, online, and in most of the high schools in the counties that Vance-Granville serves.
The Applied Technologies has had several new certificates approved for introduction this coming school year of 2011-2012. Each relate to “green” technology and are anchored by the new Sustainability Technologies certificate. This is a 15 hour certificate designed to enhance employability in “green” fields of manufacturing, construction, transportation, and any area where energy conservation or alternative energy is an issue. There are also sustainability-oriented certificates now offered in the fields of Automotive Technology; Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology; and Electrical/Electronics Technology. Although there is not a specific sustainability certificate in Carpentry, much of the course work is now oriented toward “green.”
In the Business Technologies half of the Division, there have been many changes in the computer education area requiring much update training for our faculty, especially in the programs of Information Systems-Security and Web Technology. Our three newest faculty, Gerry Young, Emmanuel Otti, and Yolanda Yoder, have quickly become “old hands” and valuable team members within the Division. Global Logistics Technology continues to grow rapidly under the leadership of Walter Martin whose 25 plus years as an Air Force logistician has enabled him to develop one of the most respected logistics programs in the nation. Our newest program, Entrepreneurship, has proven to be a popular one for those students whose ultimate objective is to own/operate their own business.
The Phi Beta Lambda business society continues to flex its muscles both in the state and nationally. While only three years old it is already one of the largest chapters in the state of North Carolina and its Professional Division is the largest. The club continues to compete well at state and national competitions. The National competitions this summer in Orlando, Florida will have representation by Vance-Granville in 16 different categories! PBL is certainly making a name for itself and the College.
