Jasmine Hightower

Jasmine Hightower is the director of student activities and athletics at Vance-Granville Community College. Hightower oversees clubs and extracurricular activities that engage students on campus, as well as the college's growing intercollegiate athletics program.
A native of Connecticut, Hightower attended Warren County High School before being admitted to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. She earned a bachelor's in journalism and mass communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was also a manager for the women's basketball team. Hightower later earned a master's in sport management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and a master's in business administration with a concentration in marketing at Indiana University-Bloomington. While a UMass student, Hightower was an intern at the National Collegiate Athletic Association. She has lived all over the country, working in sports and marketing positions for organizations including the Harlem Globetrotters, the Women's Sports Foundation, the University of California-Santa Cruz athletics department and, most recently, Whirlpool Corporation, where she was a category manager.

   
Coach Avery Wilson
Basketball Coach - Tim James

Tim James is the head men's basketball coach for VGCC. The Miami native graduated from the University of Miami in 1999, where he became just the second Hurricane to have his number (40) retired and the only Hurricane to record over 1,500 points, 800 rebounds and 200 blocked shots in a career. Playing forward, he helped Coach Leonard Hamilton's squads to four consecutive winning seasons and three consecutive postseason bids, including the school's first NCAA tournament trip since 1960. James was a two-time First Team All-Big East selection, and was named Third Team All-American by both the Associated Press and National Association of Basketball Coaches. He was named Co-Big East Player of the Year in 1998-1999, along with Connecticut's Richard Hamilton. He was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. After graduating from UM, James became a first round draft pick (25th overall) of the Miami Heat. He spent three years in the NBA with Miami, the Charlotte Hornets and the Philadelphia 76ers, and then played professionally overseas in Turkey, Japan and Israel. James enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2008 and after basic training was deployed to Iraq on July 27, 2009, where he served for 12 months before returning to the United States in 2010. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal in 2011 and joined VGCC later that year.

   
Heather Chance
VGCC Volleyball Coach - Heather Chance

Heather Chance is the head coach for the women' s volleyball program at Vance-Granville Community College. A Dallas, Texas native, Chance played organized volleyball for 13 years, primarily as a middle hitter/blocker. After playing for Wilmer-Hutchins High School, Chance started her higher education at the junior college level. She made the First Team All-Conference as a volleyball player for Cedar Valley College, a community college in Lancaster, Texas. After one season, Chance transferred to Fayetteville State University. She was a member of the 2007 FSU Broncos team that went undefeated and won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship. Chance also was named to the CIAA All-Conference team twice, and was team captain in 2008. She graduated from Fayetteville State in 2010 with degrees in Psychology and Health Education. Chance also has experience as a coach for the South Dallas Starlings club team (with players from ages five to l 8) in 2005 and 2006. She currently works as assistant manager for Finish Line.
   
Shervi Barnes
VGCC Golf Coach - Jim Schwab

Jim Schwab of Durham was named the coach for the intercollegiate golf program at VGCC in 2010. Schwab has been playing golf since he was 25 years old. After he retired as a Duke University police officer, he became a professional golf instructor in 2003, earning his master's certification from the United States Golf Teachers Federation in 2005. He has taught both newcomers to the game and experienced golfers, in addition to competing as an amateur and professionally himself over the years.
