The division consists of the following programs: English, Fine Arts/Humanities,
Mathematics/Physics, Psychology, Science (biology, chemistry and geology), Social Sciences,
Early Childhood Associate, Teacher Associate, Bioprocess Technology, and Developmental
Studies. The department teaches all of the arts and sciences courses at the College, offers
the AA and AS degrees through the College Transfer Program, the AGE, and AAS degrees and
diplomas through the Early Childhood, Teacher Associate, and Bioprocess Technology programs.
The faculty consists of 44 full-time instructors supplemented by approximately 60 adjunct
faculty. All curriculum-level instructors have at least a master's degree; four have Ph.D.s.
This division has developed "writing across the curriculum" and "computing across the
curriculum:" policies in which the majority of classes in the program require students to do
a significant amount of writing and use a computer to do a portion of their class work. The
department has developed an innovative teacher preparation program and is serving as a
mentor to two other institutions as part of the National Endowment for the Humanities
project "Advancing the Humanities in Teacher Preparation Programs at Community Colleges."
Each spring, the department names a select number of College Transfer Scholars, students
with a GPA of at least 3.0 who have been recommended by at least two faculty members and
approved by the entire faculty. At the Scholars ceremony, the Chairman also gives the
Chairman's Award to an outstanding faculty member. The department sponsors several speakers
each year on liberal arts topics such as science, history, or literature that are open to
all students and to the community.The Humanities/Fine Arts Program provides yearly showcases
of student art and dramatic performances.The division offers liberal arts courses for
students enrolled in all curriculum programs at the college; in any given semester, most of
the students enrolled at the college take at least one course from this department.
Where we are located?
Division offices are located on the Main Campus in Henderson in building 6 in the office
complex in the back of the building. The division administrative assistant, Ms. Deanna
Stegall, is in 6134; the division dean's office is located in room 6133. Other division
faculty are located at various locations such as Franklin County Campus in Louisburg, and at
South Campus in Creedmoor.
