The College operates a full-time Day Care Center as a training laboratory for the Early Childhood Associate program. Children of students, staff and others are eligible for admittance to the center. Full-time students at Vance-Granville Community College are encouraged to use this resource for placement of their children. The center opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m. each Monday through Friday. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are served. VGCC Main Campus Daycare VGCC's Day Care Center is a "Five Star" licensed child care facility. The facility earned the rating for having a knowledgeable and dedicated staff, a safe and attractive environment, and opportunities for children to develop mentally, physically and socially.

"The 'Five Star' rating means we qualify totally with the requirements set forth by the North Carolina Department of Human Resources, Division of Child Development," says Denise Gill, center director. Randy Parker, VGCC president, adds, "We&re very proud of this facility; it is the only one its kind in the area with the 'Five Star' rating and is considered a model statewide for childcare."

To meet these higher standards, the center has improved its parent/teacher involvement, expanded its program curriculum , increased facility space per child, and reduced its staff-child ratios.

All of this and more was accomplished when the facility was relocated in a wing of the new 24,000 square-foot Classroom/DayCare Building on Main Campus. Previously, since its opening in 1976, it had operated in a section of the first floor of the Administrative Building.

The new center consists of 6,000 square feet, some 2,000 square feet larger than the older facility. It contains four individual classrooms, a new multi-purpose room, a kitchen for the preparation of meals for the children, a staff workroom/lounge and a director&s office.

"This larger facility enables us to provide more space per child, which was a key factor in our receiving the 'Five-Star' rating," says Gill.

The VGCC DayCare is open to the public, but space is limited and a waiting list for most classes exists.
